For nearly 50 years, the Eldorado has helped distinguish Cadillac from the competition. The flagship Cadillac coupe has been a technological showcase in recent years, debuting new groundbreaking innovations.

Last year, production of the Cadillac Eldorado was shifted to the Lansing Craft Centre in Lansing, Mich. This move was designed to create manufacturing efficiencies, a better balance between available facilitates, market demand and improving overall quality.

Available in ESC and ETC models, the Cadillac coupe is powered by two versions of the improved Northstar 4.6L V-8 engine bolted to the silky smooth 4T80-E four-speed electronic automatic with overdrive and viscous-type converter clutch. Additional Northstar technology, including Magnasteer variable-assist power steering and independent four-wheel suspension, make driving this car an impressive experience. The ETC adds such powerful performance and control goodies as the StabiliTrak control system and a continuously variable road-sensing suspension combined with electronic level control.

Cadillac did not skimp on the creature comforts either, with a thoughtful layout of displays and controls as well as improving the feel of the front seats. The positioning of the climate controls are located in the center console for ease of use.

Rear-seat passengers were not neglected, with "B" pillar-mounted grab handles to aid in entry and exit. The rear seat is a roomy place that features an armrest and two cupholders. Two adults are easily accommodated without problem. A low lift-over highlights the trunk opening, with slightly more than 15 cubic feet of nicely finished cargo area available.

Ratings & specifications

Engine performance numbers for the two versions of the Northstar 4.6 V-8 are as follows: 275 hp at 5,600 rpm and 300 ft/lbs of torque at 4,000 rpm (ESC coupe) and 300 hp at 6,000 rpm and 295 ft/lbs of torque at 4,400 rpm (ETC coupe). EPA fuel economy is 18 city/27 highway using regular unleaded gasoline. Underhood fluids easily accessible but not clearly marked.

Standard safety equipment includes dual front airbags, four-wheel disc brakes with anti-lock, all-speed traction control, daytime running lights, fog lamps, PassKey II theft deterrent system, front cornering lamps, retained accessory power, automatic programmable power door lock system and remote keyless entry. ETC adds StabiliTrak chassis control system, continuously variable road-sensing suspension and Rainsense wiper system.

StabiliTrak is available as an option for the ESC coupe as part of the $2,900 ESC Luxury Package. This package also includes a wood trim steering wheel, 16-inch chrome wheels and Bose AM/FM CD stereo system.

The base Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) for the Cadillac Eldorado begins at $38,306 for the base model and $40,809 for the ETC. Destination charge adds $745. Dealers report an average supply of the Eldorado, so finding one should not be a problem.
